Davao and Central Luzon researchers claim the top spots in the Oral Research Paper Presentation Competition during the 17th Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) Week, with Joshua M. Cambronero and Evelyn V. Totaan, taking the first place in the Student and Professional categories, respectively.

Held on August 14, 2024, at the Almont Inland Resort in Butuan City, the competition is a part of the PNHRS Week celebration, highlighting the country’s brightest minds as they presented health research projects from across the country’s 17 regions.

Cambronero, representing Region 11, secured 1st Place in the Student Category with his research on the antioxidant and anticancer properties of Moringa oleifera Lam stalk extracts. In the same category, Eirenne Jem D. Soriano from Region 1 took 2nd Place for her study on the blood glucose-lowering activity and acute toxicity of Neonauclea bartlingii var. cumingiana leaf extract, a promising natural treatment for diabetes. Francis Kenneth B. Araya from NCR claimed 3rd Place with his research on the risks of neurotoxins and reproductive hormones in common vapor rub liniments, highlighting concerns in everyday medicinal products.

In the Professional Category, Totaan from Region 3 earned 1st Place for her research on the antioxidant and histoprotective properties of the Balakat Tree (Ziziphus talanai), highlighting the potential of the tree’s extracts to protect against neurological damage, particularly from the effects of monosodium glutamate (MSG). Second place was awarded to Cheryll Didi Nellie N. Obra from Region 1 (Ilocos) for her critical work on the prevalence and risk factors of health conditions among tobacco farmers, while Reggie Y. Dela Cruz from Region 10 rounded out the winners, taking 3rd Place for his research on the development of pharmaceutical products derived from ferns.

Each presentation was judged on scientific rigor, socio-economic relevance, and real-world applicability, highlighting the role of research in addressing both national and regional health challenges, and celebrating the dedication of Filipino researchers in advancing the health and well-being of communities in the Philippines.

PNHRS Lead Coordinator and DOST-PCHRD Executive Director Dr. Jaime C. Montoya emphasized the significance of the competition and its alignment with the PNHRS theme: “The theme this year highlights the power of collaboration in advancing our national health research agenda. By showcasing exceptional research through the Oral Research Paper Competition, we see firsthand how local innovations contribute to addressing the health needs of our communities. The work presented here today is vital not only to our country’s public health but also to the global health research landscape.”

The competition reinforced the significance of health research in the Philippines and highlighted the importance of continuous investment in research to tackle pressing health issues.
