THE PROBLEM

Among the identified Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is the elimination of the human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) pandemic by 2030. The Philippines has had the fastest growth in new HIV diagnoses globally, with a staggering 237% increase since 2010 and a surge of more than 12,000 cases in 2021 alone. This alarming trend is driven by various factors, including limited access to testing and treatment services, persistent stigma and discrimination, and a lack of comprehensive sexual education. Additionally, gaps in the HIV treatment cascade continue to expand, with many individuals remaining undiagnosed, untreated, or unable to achieve viral suppression. These challenges underscore the urgent need for targeted interventions, increased funding, and stronger policies to address the growing epidemic and improve health outcomes for affected populations

THE SOLUTION

To address this problem, the HerbalRx International, Inc. has implemented the project mainly to develop a secure, encrypted, purpose-built online platform that can allow different treatment hubs or organizations to deliver multiple HIV related-services directly to people living with HIV (PLHIV), provide differentiated care and address concerns specific to the population – starting with local patients being catered by institutions within Metro Manila.

TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT STATUS

PlusPal has reached Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 9, demonstrating full maturity and readiness for deployment. With the startup grant funding, the migration from AWS hosting to Firebase was prioritized to reduce costs and enhance the efficiency of deployment and subscription management. Additionally, bug fixes were implemented, along with the creation of a comprehensive FAQs page and an online PlusPal Manual.

PlusPal continues to offer its core features:

• Messaging – Allows real-time communication between clients and service providers through text messages, file/document sharing, and in-chat voice calls, all protected by end-to-end encryption.
• Patient Folder – Offers secure storage for client notes, clinical summaries, and files, ensuring easy access and efficient referral management.
• Appointments – Facilitates the scheduling of follow-up consultations and referrals directly within the platform.
• Transactions – Simplifies the creation of official invoices for services rendered on the platform.

CURRENT NEEDS

The technology owner and the research team plans to distribute and disseminate the project’s result and the policy paper to relevant stakeholders. To attract possible technology adopters and investors for further improvement of the platform, the team plans to conduct information dissemination activities.
