THE PROBLEM

The impact of natural disasters on food security and safety is frequently underrepresented in disaster risk management frameworks. When disasters strike, they often disrupt food supply chains, damage agricultural infrastructure, and create shortages of essential and nutritious food items. These disruptions can lead to immediate food insecurity and significant nutritional deficiencies, particularly among the most vulnerable populations. These situations also apply to man-made disasters.

Children are especially at risk, as their rapid growth and development make them highly susceptible to the adverse effects of subsequent malnutrition after disasters. They face an increased likelihood of starvation-related diseases, developmental delays, and higher mortality rates during crises. The consequences of such deficiencies can have long-lasting effects on their physical health and cognitive development.

THE SOLUTION

The Philippine Women’s College of Davao spearheaded the development of safe and nutritious emergency foods tailored specifically for children aged one to five, a group particularly vulnerable during disasters. This innovative research has resulted in the four Ready-To-Eat (RTE) products, namely: 1) All-Veggie Monggo Meal, 2) All-Veggie Cornmeal Porridge, 3) Fruit-Veggie Leather with Peanuts and Puffed Rice, and 4) Seed-Enriched Whole Grain Cookies.

These emergency foods are crafted from ingredients readily available in the Davao Region and have been rigorously tested for acceptability, safety, and shelf stability. Each product is meticulously formulated to meet the daily caloric and nutritional needs of young children, ensuring they receive essential nourishment during crises. This effort supports both the health and well-being of children and enhances community resilience in the face of disasters.

TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT STATUS

The technology is currently at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6. The utility model (UM) registration for the All-Veggie Cornmeal Porridge has been approved while the results of application of the other three (3) products are still being processed.

CURRENT NEEDS

The technology owner is seeking strategic partnerships and technology adopters to commercialize the food products. They are also open to collaborative efforts with Local Government Units to integrate this solution into regional disaster response plans, ensuring food security in times of crisis and supporting long-term community resilience.
