THE PROBLEM
The rising mortality rates due to Multidrug-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MDRSA) have become a significant public health concern. The lack of effective and accessible antibacterial agents against MDRSA not only impedes the treatment of these infections but also weakens existing preventive measures, leaving populations increasingly vulnerable. As antibiotic resistance continues to outpace the development of new drugs, the global healthcare community faces an urgent challenge of combating antibiotic resistance. This public health issue has intensified research efforts to explore and optimize natural resources, particularly plant-based functional foods, as potential sources of novel antibacterial agents.
THE SOLUTION
The University of San Agustin – Center for Chemical Biology and Biotechnology, under the leadership of Dr. Doralyn Dalisay, has discovered the potent antibiotic properties of Cajanus cajan (Pigeon Pea, locally known as kadios) seeds. This groundbreaking study revealed significant antibacterial activity against multiple strains of Staphylococcus aureus and other skin pathogens. The team successfully identified antibiotic compounds, marking a promising advancement in the fight against bacterial infections.
Their research initiative led to the development of the antibacterial topical formulation called Skivios. The research team partnered with Pharma GalenX Innovations, Inc., for formulation and Maridan Industries Inc. for the large-scale manufacturing and packaging.
TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT STATUS
The technology is currently at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 9. Skivios is now available in the market with an actual price of 299 pesos for 60 grams of Serum Gel, and 499 pesos for 120 mL Soothing Facial Mist.
