DOST to host 9th Balik Scientist Convention, highlights contributions of Balik Scientists in Sustainable Development
To celebrate the invaluable contributions of Balik Scientists and nurture strong scientific partnerships in the Philippines, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is poised to set the stage for the 9th Balik Scientist Convention on 27 September 2023 at Quest Plus Conference Center, Clark Freeport, Pampanga.
With the theme “Balik Scientist: Harnessing Global Science for Sustainable Development and Transformation,” the convention will feature a day full of activities that will provide updates on the latest technologies, research studies, and capacity-building initiatives in the fields of health, agriculture, aquatic resources, industry, and energy.
In an effort to sustain the exchange of ideas among Balik Scientists and the local scientific community, fostering a more robust research environment, the DOST through the BSP Convention serves as a platform to raise awareness about the significant contributions of Balik Scientists to address national issues and their tangible impact on the Filipino populace and the economy.
The event will kick off with an opening ceremony, followed by three plenary presentations, each featuring three Balik Scientists as speakers, covering topics ranging from agriculture, health, and industry and emerging technology hosted by DOST’s three sectoral councils: the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD), the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD), and the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD).
Following the plenary sessions are three forums organized by PCAARRD, PCHRD, and PCIEERD, which will be moderated by their respective Executive Directors. Two Balik Scientists will present in each forum with topics as follows: “PH’s Health Security and Health System Resilience for Future Emergencies,” “Climate Smart Agriculture for Food Security,” and “Artificial Intelligence: From Policy to Practical Application.”
The Convention also includes the recognition of currently engaged Balik Scientists and Host Institutions, a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a poster exhibit, recognition of BSP Poster Presentation Participants, and networking opportunities.
